SMS is always looking for qualified people to referee games. You must be at least 13-years-old or older to take the Grassroots Referee course. Courses are usually held in the late summer and late winter to prepare referees for the upcoming seasons. (St. Mary’s is usually late winter.) Refresher courses are taken annually and must be taken to be recertified every year.
The Grassroots Referee course consists of an online portion through the U.S. Soccer Digital Learning Center plus an in-person portion offered by the Maryland State Referee Association. It is required to complete all portions of the online and in-person courses in order to become a referee.
In order to register for a course, click on the registration button/link directly below the desired course. You will receive a follow-up email confirming your submission and telling you if anything additional is required. Space is limited and when a course is full, registration ends. Registration for courses is cut off seventy-two hours prior to the 1st day. Registration after that may incur an additional late fee.
If you register to take the Grassroots Referee course, you must complete the online portion of the training prior to attending an in person class. If you do not complete all sessions prior to the in-person course, you will be removed from that course and will offered the opportunity to attend a different one. The in-person class is typically held in the evening or weekends.
NOTE: Referee 18 years or older will need to complete the Safe Sport Training in order to officiate any games. When you turn 18 you will have 30 days to complete this Safe Sport Training. This free online course can be completed in approximately 2.5 hours.
